How to Play a Mahogany Blues Guitar

Ever played mahogany blues guitar? No, it won’t produce depressing music! In fact, the blues guitar scales feature pentatonic scales with one additional note, which is called “blue note”. This is because it renders an apparent “bluesyness” to the pentatonic scale.

There is only one difference between guitar scales and scales on any other musical instrument - you can play guitar scales in more than one way thanks to the strings of guitar. You can play a unique note in 3-5 ways with this instrument.

Using Blues Scale In Lead Guitar Playing:

You can produce a minor pentatonic scale by using 1st tone (root), flatter 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th tones of a major scale. You don’t have to use 2nd or 6th tone. You can produce a minor blues scale by adding a flatted 5th tone to the scale. In the A key, this produces a scale with the following notes in it: A, C, D, Eb, E, and G.

There are people who don’t distinguish between minor and major blues scales. Remember, a blues scale means the minor version.

You can produce a major pentatonic scale by using 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th tones on a major scale. In the C key, it would produce C, D, E, G, and A notes. To create a major blues scale, add a flatted 3rd tone that gives you the following notes in C key: C, D, Eb, E, G, and A.

Remember:

The rules regulating relative major as well as minor scales are working here. Observe the keys of A of minor scale and C of major scale. You will notice similar group of notes. Both the scales are relative, which means they comprise of the same notes.

The minor blues scale of A key has A, C, D, Eb, E, and C notes and the major blues scale of C key contains C, D, Eb, E, G, and A notes. The notes are same. Where’s the difference then? It’s in the starting point!

This is a common occurrence in music. And if you are playing a mahogany blues guitar, you will find that its scales are doing double duty! Once you master one pattern, it becomes useful for one major, one minor, and 2 keys.

Playing The 12 Bar Blues Progression:

This is simple. Suppose, the first chord of the progression is A7, make use of that minor blues scale over the song to solo. You need not alter scales at all.

Although the above way is not the ultimate one, it’s still preferable due to its simplicity, especially when you are learning to play mahogany blues guitar. There are other ways, too, to play 12 bar progression or other type of chord progression, for that matter. The common approach is to use a combination of minor and major blues scale.

Even if you think you have a wonderful memory you should still record key events and other useful information in writing. Over time our brains reorganise information and our memories change and get distorted, often just the act of trying to recall something important will change the way a memory is recorded in your brain.

I’m always amazed at how many people attend meetings and make notes on scraps of paper or throwaway notepads. Coming from a scientific background I was trained to keep detailed logs and journals and this discipline has stayed with me into business and personal life.

I have a series of lovely bound notebooks dating back to the earlier 80’s which I’ve used day in day out to record notes, meeting minutes, important follow up actions, telephone numbers etc. I keep these on a bookshelf in chronological order. Now if I need to think back over the reasons or background for decisions or remember how something was handled I just reach for the notebook I was using at the time and read through my entries for the period.

A friend uses his diary as a simple means of tracking how his business is developing. Each night he writes the value of sales that day in to his diary along with a note of any exceptional orders or issues that day. Over the years this has become invaluable, as he looks back on how sales developed around key dates like Easter and put calls in to key customers around the anniversary of big orders they had placed the previous year. The funny thing is that although he could get this information off his computer without much effort, somehow the act of writing it down and keeping it in his jacket pocket just makes it so much more immediate, usable and compulsively addictive. In his case he doesn’t relax or stop until his team has made more sales that the same day the prior year!

Personally I don’t advise actually buying a diary. Their rigid day by day structure is too inflexible. I recommend you treat yourself to a beautiful journal that you will be proud to own and carry around with you. On the front page I write the date I started using it and leave a space for the date of the last entry which I fill in when I complete the last page.

Start each day on a fresh page by writing the date. I personally like to start the day by making a list of the things I must accomplish that day, so that I can tick them off throughout the day. Then as I move from one meeting or appointment to another I then write down a new sub heading which includes the time and a short description of the meeting for example “15:00 Budget Review”. Issues and actions can then be written under the heading as required.

I don’t limit this approach to work, in part because in today’s knowledge economy I’m not sure we ever really stop working but also because the same approach is so useful in my private life as well. For example I had some electrical work carried out a couple of years ago but I couldn’t recall the name of the great electrician we’d found when I needed more work doing this year. My journal came to the rescue and I just looked back through my entries from that time and there it was along with a note I’d made of his telephone number.

So in summary I don’t believe that keeping a diary or a journal need be a chore, it’s more a way of just being efficient.

Wheat is the most common form of gluten

Common wheat containing substances that you might find on a list of ingredients include semolina and couscous.

There are some substances that may or may not be derived from wheat, and sadly many manufacturers do not specify whether this is the case on their packaging. If you see substances such as starch, bran, hydrolyzed vegetable protein or dextrimaltose in a food product, avoid it unless you know for sure these are derived from a gluten-free source.

The word flour can mean many things

When you see the word flour on its own in a list of ingredients, it probably means wheat flour, or literally ‘ground wheat’ as this is the most common type of flour. If a different type of flour is used, this will usually be stated on the packaging. Safe forms of flour that don’t include gluten are rice flour, potato flour, buckwheat flour, chestnut flour and corn flour.

There are many ways that wheat flour can be described, but don’t be fooled, they all contain gluten. Some descriptions of wheat flour include plain flour, self-raising flour, stoneground flour, wheatgerm flour, malted wheatgrain flour and wholemeal four.

Other gluten containing substances

The two most common gluten containing substances besides wheat are barley and rye, so look out for these when you are checking out ingredients. There are a number of derivatives of barley that you might not realise contain gluten and these include caramel coloring and malt, which can be in the form of a flavoring or vinegar.

Caffeine Addiction: Keep Your Plan to Quit Simple

Caffeine is a potentially addictive substance. For this reason, users often experience emotional and physical withdrawal symptoms when quitting.

While not as dangerous as drugs like alcohol and opiates, caffeine can cause serious problems when used excessively. Issues ranging from irritability and insomnia to stomach ulcers and heart disease have been linked to caffeine addiction by numerous independent studies and medical examinations.

While plenty of motivation to quit exists, caffeine users are often shocked by just how difficult it can be to break this habit. The first thing you need to bear in mind when deciding to quit is this:

Stopping the use of any addictive substance is going to be a significant challenge. Be prepared ahead of time and do not make the mistake of thinking it will be easy to stop cold turkey.

Once you’ve come to terms with the fact that you’re in for a challenge, the next critical step is to outline a simple plan and stick with it. The key words are both simple and plan.

And don’t set unrealistic expectations or be too hard on yourself. If you’ve been drinking two pots of coffee every day for ten years you should probably not try to stop cold turkey right this very minute.

In the above example scenario you might want to reduce to one pot for the next week or two, gaining confidence when you are able to cut back in this manner. Then, on a pre-selected date, make the jump to no caffeine at all.

You will most likely experience withdrawal on some level. This can occur as mild to severe depression, headaches, extreme fatigue and irritability, or a host of other symptoms.

Because everyone has a different physical and emotional makeup the exact nature of your withdrawal may vary from what others report. You could have very mild symptoms or a very severe experience; it’s best to be prepared by deciding to deal with the worst-case scenario.

If you relapse (start using caffeine again even after stopping) don’t make this an excuse to give up! Just return to your focus and stop again as soon as possible.

It is entirely normal for people to have to try multiple times before finally succeeding in their attempt to stop using an addictive substance.

Your plan might include a routine change or the use of a new breakfast beverage to fill the void. At the core of your plan should be the idea of taking one day at a time don’t worry about “forever” or next month, just focus on getting through the current day without caffeine.

By keeping it simple and going one day at a time you’ll find things get much easier as you go. Before you know it you’ll be totally caffeine free and you won’t even miss your old habit.

How To Treat Gluten Related Lactose Intolerance

People with untreated Celiac’s disease, often suffer from lactose intolerance or a milk allergy as well. Unfortunately because the symptoms of the two conditions are fairly similar, and the symptoms of lactose intolerance are more obvious, appearing within a couple of hours of eating dairy products, sometimes only the lactose intolerance is diagnosed. Actually most celiacs don’t actually have a milk allergy, the condition is temporarily caused by Celiac’s disease and is a symptom of that condition.

How does Celiac’s disease cause lactose intolerance?

In a healthy digestive system, milk sugar, or lactose is usually broken down into simple sugars that are easily absorbed by an enzyme called lactase. Lactase is produced on the tips of the villi, tube-like growths on the wall of the intestine that help with the absorption of nutrients. In the digestive system of a celiac, gluten fighting antibodies attack the gut, damaging the villi and preventing the production of lactase to break down lactose.

If milk sugars aren’t broken down by lactase, they can’t be absorbed and they move into the colon where they are digested by normal intestinal bacteria. Water rushes into the colon in an attempt to dilute the lactose. This causes the symptoms of lactose intolerance such as excessive gas, bloating, stomach pains and watery acid diarrhea.

Treating a Celiac related milk allergy

Eliminating foods that contain gluten from your diet is the best way to treat all symptoms of Celiac’s disease, including lactose intolerance. If you stop eating gluten, the villi in your gut will gradually repair themselves and become capable of producing the enzyme lactase again. This process is not instant and it will take at least six months before you stop being lactose intolerance. Depending on the progression of your Celiac’s disease it may take up to two years.

To avoid the symptoms of lactose intolerance you might want to avoid eating dairy food for the first six month of your gluten-free diet, and gradually reintroduce dairy foods after this time. This will give your gut the chance to heal more quickly and effectively, but it can be hard to avoid dairy products when you are already struggling to stop eating foods that contain gluten.

Ask your doctor to test for Celiac’s disease

When undiagnosed celiacs are diagnosed as lactose intolerant, they are encouraged to reduce the amount of milk products and dairy in their diet, and to change the way they eat dairy so that it is absorbed more easily. This change in diet may significantly improve their symptoms, but will not remove them altogether, and the gut will continue to be damaged by gluten fighting antibodies attacking the tissue.

Even though these sufferers will continue to experience symptoms, some will be so relieved to have a slight improvement that they won’t ask their doctor to do further tests. Lactose intolerance can be an indicator of various other diseases such as Cryptosporidium infection as well as Celiac’s disease so if you are diagnosed as lactose intolerant you should always ask your doctor to investigate further. A simple blood test can indicate whether or not you are suffering from Celiac’s disease rather than a simple milk allergy.

Side Effects of Dermatitis Herpetiformis Drug

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a rare skin eruption associated with Celiac’s disease. It is caused by gluten fighting antibodies attacking the gut in the same way as Celiac’s disease, but often people with dermatitis herpetiformis don’t experience the usual symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Instead they develop a very itchy rash of red spots and fluid filled blisters.

Dermatitis herpetiformis can be treated by eliminating gluten from the diet, and will heal gradually, but some doctors recommend accelerating the healing process by taking a drug known as Dapsone. However, this drug has a number of side effects you should be aware of before deciding whether or not to take it. You should certainly be sure of the diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis before you take Dapsone, and this will involve a skin biopsy to get a definite result.

What is Dapsone?

Dapsone belongs to the sulphonamide family of medicines, and is an antibacterial drug. Originally it was used to treat leprosy, but more recently has been found to relieve other inflammatory diseases of the skin such as pyoderma gangrenosum, vasculitis and dermatitis herpetiformis.

Dapsone is available as a tablet of either fifty or one hundred milligrams. Because of the potential side effects, your doctor will prescribe as low a dose as possible and this will usually be between fifty and two hundred milligrams daily.

Potential side effects of Dapsone

All patients that take Dapsone experience a slight decrease in their red blood cell count and their levels of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. This can cause a variety of symptoms including the following:

• Mild headaches, nausea or vomiting

• A blue tinge to the lips or fingertips

• Anemia

• Breathlessness

• Excessive fatigue

More severe symptoms associated with a large decrease in red blood cell count include:

• Fever

• Mouth ulcers

• Sore throat

• Bruising

• Depression

People that have a genetic condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency are more likely to develop side effects of Dapsone, and this condition is more prevalent in those of Mediterranean, African and Asian ancestry. You can be tested for this deficiency before you begin to take Dapsone. Rarely, patients can be allergic to Dapsone, and they may experience a high fever, swelling of the glands in the throat and an additional rash.

Using Dapsone for a long period of time can cause impaired nerve function in the arms and legs, which can lead to weakening of the muscles in the feet and hands. It can also reduce fertility in men by reducing sperm count and mobility. For these reasons, Dapsone is used for as short a time as possible to relieve the symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis while the gluten-free diet takes effect.

Monitoring of patients on Dapsone

Because of the side effects of Dapsone, patients usually undergo tests before the drug is prescribed, and every three months during the course of their treatment. These tests ensure your red blood cell count doesn’t drop too drastically, and that your liver is functioning correctly. If you develop any side effects between routine testing, you should have a blood count test as a matter or urgency.

Why would I take Dapsone with so many side effects?

Although Dapsone does have a number of potential side effects, it has been used successfully to treat thousands of cases of dermatitis herpetiformis. It can relieve the symptoms of this chronic disease quickly, and help the sufferer to live a normal life while they are waiting for their gluten-free diet to take effect and repair the damage Celiac’s disease has caused to their gut.

Simply eliminating gluten from your diet will usually stop the symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis eventually, but you may have to live with the condition for up to two years, and it will return if you reintroduce gluten into your diet.

Although many women with Celiac’s disease manage to conceive and give birth to perfectly healthy babies, celiacs who continue to eat foods that contain gluten throughout pregnancy risk having a low birth weight baby, due to their inability to absorb sufficient nutrients for it to grow to a normal weight.

This contradicts a popular theory that celiacs should start to include gluten in their diet again when they become pregnant, to ensure their babies are getting enough grains.
